(More customer reviews)I bought this locally when installing a trash compactor into existing cabinets in place of a jig saw. I usually buy DeWalt, but the store clerk seemed knowledgeable and recommended this unit. I bought it with extra SZ05 Sabrecut wood bits.
Very good power, no complaints about the grip. Sort of like a Dremel on steroids. I had problems controlling it making long straight line cuts and eventually used my Sawzall to clean them up. I also had problems making small curved cuts (half inch wide, quarter inch high) in wood. This will probably be less of a problem with practice.
Cutting through about 1/2" oak is probably near the limits of RZ05 capabilities. The same size particle board presented no problems.
Wrenchless bit change is good, but...when starting a cut at an angle, as recommended in the manual, it's really easy to angle the plastic bit grip into the work surface, at which point the red bit grip melts and spatters plastic all over the work surface. Very quickly, I might add. This needs some re-design IMHO.
Gravity will pull out the bit on vertical cuts (i.e. bit at bottom) until one learns how tight to make the chuck. In some cases, and I haven't figured out why yet, the chuck unthreads from the threaded drive shaft when trying to loosen it with no bit in place. This was noted in another review.
Case is good, but it seems large for the RZ05 by itself. I guess if one buys the full complement of accessories, it will be needed.
It comes with a good little accessory bit holder, but packages of extra bits don't fit, only the bits themselves. This makes it difficult to separate new bits by type.
My recommendations:
1. If you are a professional, this thing will probably live up to the Rotozip reputation.
2. If you are a weekend do-it-yourselfer, I think the RZ05 has limitations for the casual user. I strongly advise practice cuts with this unit before doing any serious work with it.
3. Use two hands! It can kick back, and nicked my finger when I was using it one-handed. Gloves probably will not help in this situation. Eye protection is, as always, important. I'm probably guilty of using my Dremel habits with this, and the RZ05 is a much more serious package. Ear protection is a must. (I use Howard Leight 33dB foamies.)
4. I think I'm going to buy the ROTOZIP Straight Edge Guide Model SEG1 to help with the straight cuts and the RotoZip RZVAC1 Dust Extraction Adapter Kit. This generates a lot of dust. Search Amazon for them.
Would I buy it again? Yes, but the reconditioned units from Amazon are probably better for the do-it-yourselfer. It's hard to say, since everyone's experience varies.
