(More customer reviews)When I first saw the commercial for the Dremel Trio on TV my first thought was `cool!' but then I thought `that looks a little like free handing with a router', which I have had bad results doing. When my wife got the chance to review one for Vine I was thrilled. After using it a couple of time it turns out my initial impression was pretty close. Our big project this weekend was to use it do a cutout for the heating register in the ½ inch laminate flooring we helped my daughter and her husband install. The tool did the job, but not without some problems. I think the ½ inch laminate was too much for the tool/bit. I was using the TR561 Multi-purpose bit and halfway through the first cut the bit broke. It was having a hard time going through the material and I was pushing too hard. I also had the depth set deeper than it need to be. New bit, less depth and less pressure and I was able to finish it fine, although the last third or so of the cut was really slow going. I don't know if the laminate was dulling the bit or fouling it, but there was a lot of smoke the last 6 inches. The next thing we tried it for was to cut a notch. We cut the two side cuts with a straight saw and then tried to do the inside cut with the Trio. Broke the bit again. With all of these cuts I used some sort of guide to run the tool along. With the register cut it was a 2x4 I keeled on. With the notch I tried the side fence. It is very difficult to use this thing free hand. I was not able to do it, although I am by no means a wood worker.
Pros:
-Well designed, comfortable tool.
-Kit includes a great case with spots for everything including bits and the manual.
-The kit includes a side fence, which can also be used to cut circles (which I haven't tried).
-Because the tool is small and easy to handle you can use it on projects where you would not be able to use a router.
-Adjustable depth, mar-proof foot.
Cons:
-No two ways about it, this is a router and you have to use it as such.
-Bits have a shaft diameter that is different from other Dremel tools (and my router).
