Tool and attachments, 6 Stars.. Case, 2 Stars.. Price, -3 Stars = 5 Stars
This Fein MultiMaster Top kit is one of those tools that cost too much but you can't do the job as fast without it. The last few years, attending woodworking shows, I would watch the demos on the MultiMaster tool. I was ALWAYS impressed as to what the tool was capable of. The price made me walk away. It was not on my list of "GEE, I've got to have that"! However I did see its potential.
Recently, I saw the ad for the new version with the quick blade release and the package supplied attachments, but was still held back by the price. Then it happened. I got a job that required this type of tool.
I had to do a job of installing decorative returns on an old house with period moldings. The old returns had rotted along with some of the crown rake boards. Making the new returns was not a problem; trimming back the 4-inch crown molding was going to be tedious to say the least. I purchased the Fein MultiMaster Top kit and felt the pain all the way back to the job..... Until I opened the box, fitted a (expensive) wood / metal cutting blade and trimmed back old rusty hard to reach nails and 4 inch crown molding to solid wood. The roofs 12/12 pitch made it almost impossible to perform the task at hand with any speed with regular tools. The MultiMaster accomplished the task in minutes. After trimming back 6 returns in under an hour, I was convinced the tool was worth the expense. It was kind of anti climatic however, doing all that work in such short time! $389.00 per hour and done so easily and quickly is what came to mind!
Since the initial purchase, I have found the MultiMaster tool to live up to all I've seen at demo shows. Once you own it, you will find yourself reaching for it more often than you planned. Time verses cost will eventually be offset as this tool pays for itself very quickly.
I find myself treating the attachments as if they were gold, considering their replacement costs. I guess Fein can get away with the high prices because there is no other tool like it that works so well. The blades by the way are very sturdy and long lasting.
Under-cutting doorjambs loaded with trim nails are a breeze. I was able to set tile under 6 doors and the blade teeth still look new. I am looking forward to trying out all the other attachments that came with the "TOP" kit.
The case has some issues. It is nice and square and stores well. It holds all of the supplied accessories and then some. BUT, after seeing the older metal case, the new plastic case is bigger and holds less. The old metal case has foam dividers that make finding each attachment quite easy. Sanding attachments and the paper can be seen on edge. The new case has 2 removable plastic storage cases within the main case. These cases have snap down covers making it difficult to see and grab what you're looking for. Within the small cases, there are no dividers; everything just sits in there bouncing around and store in no particular order. The outside of the main case is consumed by the nice handle, which is recessed in the top of the case when standing on edge, it chews up a lot of storage space that could have been used to have divided storage inside like the old metal case.
I have zero complaints about the quality of the tool and the attachments. They all do what they are supposed to do. My complaints lye with cost of product and attachments, and the poor thoughtfulness of the case storage areas. This tool will not be easy for most people to purchase because of the cash outlay. In my case, it was one of those tools that came to mind while in a predicament. I purchased it, and think of it as a Cool Tool!

Fein FMM 250Q Top Plus MultiMaster Oscillating Detail Sander Tool Kit Review

I bought this tool with a specific job in mind - removing the vinyl floor in my kitchen. My installer said we'd need to go over the old floor with new underlayment, since the old floor would just be too hard to remove, and we'd probably damage the plywood underneath. But I recalled seeing this tool in action, and placed my order, hoping I hadn't just made a $399 mistake.
I opened the case, installed the power scraping blade, crossed my fingers and turned it on. WOW! It sliced the old vinyl floor away cleanly, adhesive and all, leaving the undamaged plywood behind. I quickly found it was easiest to run a utility knife blade through the flooring in strips just a little wider than the blade, and then the floor started to fly out. To be sure, it's still work, and you're still on your hands and knees - and I wouldn't want to strip an auditorium this way - but for my project, it will save me paying for underlayment (1/2 the price of the tool in one fell swoop!) and, more importantly, keep me from having to build the floor up higher than I'd like relative to the adjacent tile.
I'm sure there's a thousand more things I can do with this tool, and I'm looking forward to exploring it's capabilities. I couldn't be happier with this bad boy!

I have been looking at these for a couple of years and could not decide between the Rockwell and Fein units. When Rockwell came out with the RK5108K kit, I jumped on it. And it is an awesome tool for plunge cutting wood, plastic, or sheet rock.
I had a door frame that did not quite align with the door, preventing the door from staying closed. I was able to cut the frame loose and re-align it in just a few minutes. I should have bought a tool like this years ago!!

Before selecting this tool, i looked at Fein, Dremel, Sonicrafter, Secco and the multifunction tool from Harbor Freight.
All are good tools, the guy at Harbor Freight store told me that they had many returns. I really liked it for the price and the cheap accessories i.e. diamond blade for $5.99.
I finally selected the bosch and i believe it is the best choice. I like it cordless, during my use, power lasted 9min, but have 4 batteries and 2 chargers on hand as i also own the PS40.
Very powerful tool. Did sanding, grouting, cutting and scraping all with ease and no fatigue on my hand (love the ergo).
i am not a pro, just a diy guy.
I strongly recommend this tool.

These blades work great in my Fein Multimaster. They are knockofffs, not manufactured by Fein. The price is much better than Fein original equipment, and the blades are long lasting.. they perform great. My only issue with these blades is that the arbor hole is cross-shaped, unlike the authentic Fein blades which have a star-shaped arbor hole. This limits the options in mounting the blade to the tool; it can only be rotated in 45º increments, allowing only 4 different work positions for the blade. The authentic Fein blades with the star-shaped arbor hole can be rotated at 22-1/2º increments -or 8 total work positions for the blade- which allows quite a bit more flexibility in tight or unusual spaces. Hello manufacturer; would it be possible to make these blades with a star-shaped arbor-hole? Other than this one significant drawback, I am very happy with my blade purchase. These blades are workhorses; they stay sharp a long time and have saved me quite a few bucks over the brand-name Fein blades.

Fein MultiMaster 250 Start Power Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool Review

Fein MultiMaster 250 Start Power Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool
Average Reviews:

I probably would have given this 4 starts -1 for the ridiculous price but the 2 stars given by the other opinion made me boost mine. This tool DOES include the quick change - there is a different lesser model that does not but this model does. This made quick work of cutting some drywall that would have been a royal PIA to cut with other means given that it was already hung and I needed to cut the drywall all the way into the back corner which would be impossible with almost any other tool - so I'd have had to get it out with a chisel - in my bizarre situation there was also metal corner bead in the inside corner again no problem for this tool and would have been nearly impossible any other way.
I also had a job where I needed to cut some base molding that was already up and installed - again piece of cake for this guy very difficult with other tools.
Cons - (other than price) it was a bit noisier than I thought it would be - but not bad.

I didn't even know this tools existed until I saw the infomercial on TV. I install interior carpentry for a living and really sat up on the couch when I saw how easily it cuts existing baseboard and door casing without tearing up the wall or beating it up with a chisel. However, I couldn't justify the obscenely high price of the Fein for a tool I thought I would rarely use, so I bought a cheap knock off version just to test it's versatility. In the one week that I had the El Cheapo before it quit, I used it to cleanly cut fascia board, T&G flooring, T-111 siding, and casing. It seemed like every time I turned around I found a new use for it. OK, now I was convinced I couldn't live without one, time to upgrade. After checking the reviews and actually handling the competitions versions at HD and Lowes, I decided to go for it get the Fein. Hands down this tool looks and feels way better than anything else I checked out. The quick blade change feature on the Fein helps justify the price, as my other tool required frequent stopping and tightening with an allen wrench. So far it has performed smoothly and competently. On the other hand I was really shocked at how cheap and flimsy the case is. What where they thinking when they designed that thing? For a couple bucks they could have designed a case more worthy of the tool. I'm used to the rugged Dewalt cases you get everytime you buy one of their tools. The price of the Fein replacement blades is also off the scale. I suggest you try Versa-Tool brand which are a good quality blade at 1/3 the price. Overall, I am pleased with the tool itself, and know from past expierence that the sting of the high price will fade over time if the tool holds up as expected.

Bosch PS50-2B 12-Volt Max Multi-X Carpenter Kit Review

Bosch PS50-2B 12-Volt Max Multi-X Carpenter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bosch multi-x use tool is exactly that. I do remodeling/ finishing/framing and light cabinet building on site and install. This tool has been used much more than I had originally thought. I've used it for drywall cutting(it makes very nice straight cuts with relatively little dust flying everywhere). I've used it for flush cutting, it will cut through a 2x4 if needed. It works great where it's to hard or awkward to use a sawzall. The detail sanding pad works great and is very nice for tight spaces or small areas. I wish there was a vaccum attachment for this though...?

Also the blades are very nice and are quite durable. I'm anxious to see bosch release their own blades/attachments soon. (A rep just said that they should be released next week. Dec 8th? ) Also he said they would be priced from 10-40% LESS then the compareable Fein attachments!! Thats about time.

Another thing. I tried to use the new Dremel's sandpaper on the bosch, but the Dremel's sandpaper are too small. They don't work well at all. I think the Dremel's other attachments will work fine though.
I think i would actually give this a 4.5 star if i could because there are a few shortcomings.
1. The battery life is short. maybe 5-10 minutes depending on how hard you're pushing this tool and how high the variable speed is. Also when maxed out, this tool does make a good amount of noise and has some vibration. I've used it often dialed about halfway up. Its quieter and less agressive but usually plenty of power. Also, a bosch Rep told me that the 12 volt max batteries are exactly the same as their 10.8 volt. I just picked up the 10.8 volt impact driver because i needed more batteries to keep this tool running. They are interchangeable and seem to work perfectly the same. I think that the battery option and freedom of cords far outweigh the downside of short battery life. (As long as you have more than 2 batteries!!!)
2. My multi-x has a hard to turn off switch. It may just be mine, because in the store the floor model was just fine.. But its bothersome.
( I bought mine in a store. )
To summerize this, I am very happy with my purchase and can't believe how i did certain things before having this handy tool. If you're serious about being efficient on the job, and are looking for a new favorite tool, you can't go wrong here.
***EDIT*** I would definately not go more than 4 Stars due to the battery life issues and no charge in cold weather. I may be looking to the Fein Multi master Top kit down the road....

The Bosch PS50-2B 12-Volt Max Multi-X Carpenter Kit includes a powerful, efficient multipurpose tool and a range of accessories for versatility, flexibility, and professional performance. This kit includes batteries, a charger, and a selection of cutting blades, so you're ready to take on heavy-duty cutting, sanding, and grinding jobs right out of the box--without sacrificing speed or comfort.
12-Volt Litheon Batteries for Long-Lasting PowerThe PS50-2B uses 12-Volt Max Litheon batteries with unmatched battery runtime and a 400-percent-longer lifetime than traditional lithium-ion batteries. In fact, two battery packs should allow you to perform primary applications without down-time. Litheon batteries are the most advanced lithium-ion batteries available today. They allow more battery charges and provide longer runtime without memory effect--meaning the batteries do not need to be empty before charging. The batteries can also be taken out of the charger before charging is complete.
Other benefits include: significantly less self discharge; electronic cell protection that guards against overheating, overload, and deep discharge; and no loss of power from the first to last screw or hole. Best of all, these batteries will fully charge in 30 minutes and will be at 85% capacity in just 15 minutes.
Handles a Range of Applications and Materials for True VersatilityVersatile and flexible, the PS50-2B offers corded performance for cutting, sanding, and a range of other tasks. It's suitable for use with soft wood, hardwood, metal, drywall, and plastic, and it creates less dust than most other sanders. For added convenience, when used with the adaptor, it's compatible with most accessories.
Compact, Well-Balanced Design for Easy HandlingMeasuring just 10.9 by 2.32 inches (LxH) and weighing only 2.12 pounds, the PS50-2B easily fits in tight spaces and corners when sanding or cutting. The plastic nose prevents marks on work pieces, and the ergonomic design with small perimeter and front soft-grip provides comfortable handling, even if the tool grows warm.
Variable Speed and Angle Adjustment for Superior ControlThe PS50-2B provides a speed range from 5,000 to 20,000 RPM that's controlled by a variable-speed dial for quick and easy speed adjustments while you're sanding.
And, for precise results, the tool holder provides variable-angle adjustment within 240 degrees.
Innovative Features for User-Friendly OperationThe PS50-2B offers a range of helpful features to keep your work going smoothly from start to finish. First, a cutting-depth scale clearly indicates cutting depth, while a flush-cutting mechanism allows you to work flush for precise angle cuts. Second, Bosch's patented play-free drive system provides precision and optimal force transmission. Third, a hole pattern lets you set the blade in 30-degree increments for optimum ergonomics. Finally, optimized tooth geometry with large gullets ensures clean cuts in the hardest of woods.
And because the PS50-2B is cordless, you can take it anywhere. With a fuel gauge that lets you know when it's time to recharge, this tool is ready when you are.
ProVantage GuaranteeThe PS50-2B comes with the ProVantage three-year protection plan, which guarantees two years of battery protection and one year of tool protection. Under this plan, you can receive two years of free battery replacements, tool replacement for one year, and a free tool repair package for the second and third years.

Rockwell RK5102K SoniCrafter Deluxe 72-Piece Kit Review

Rockwell RK5102K SoniCrafter Deluxe 72-Piece Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OMG, the Rockewell SoniCrafter is great. I was looking for a corded oscillating tool and looked at the Fein Multitasker and blades, but it is just way too expensive to purchase for my needs. So I bought the Dremel and the Rockwell to compare side by side...
The $100 Dremel is lighter and a bit smaller but the buzz the motor makes compared to the Rockwell motor [a little bit heavier and slightly bigger] which humms smoothly is like comparing a Vespa scooter to a Victory street bike.
Since the basic Rockwell is only $20 more than the Dremel and the extra blades are about the same price, there was no question about going for the quality/durability of a Rockwell.
The only convenience problem that I can foresee is getting replacement blades:
Dremel is carried by big box hardware stores; hobbyists who do crafts on the spur of the moment and do not need to rip open walls, will appreciate the around-the-corner convenience.
Rockwell is carried by speciality woodworking stores or the internet; the Home Proj. kind of guys have to plan ahead before ripping into a wall for remodeling. So ordering parts in advance should be a no brainer.
I also really liked the Rockwell case, it is created with niches and screw-downs to hold lots of blades/attachments in place.
I looked at the Bosch 12v battery operated version, and that would have been a good choice but I do not want to have numerous 18v tool systems and chargers for the various power hand tools that I use. I read that the Bosch delivers 20 min of battery power and I might need more time than that between charges.
All four tools mentioned above have variable speeds pretty much the same: 10,000 - 21,000 opm. The Bosch details that I read boasted of 5,000 - 20,000 opm, but I do not know if I need to go that slow. If I did I would have researched more into the rare Praxon version of oscillating tool, which is reportedly underpowered and equivalent to size and weight of the Dremel.

Dremel 6300-01 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit Review

Dremel 6300-01 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my Dremel Multi-Max about a week ago and was anxious to try it out on a serious project. The Project: Cut out exterior window molding that had begun to rot. The tool did the job as expected; in fact I felt like a surgeon cutting out a tumor. However, after just a few minutes of use, the blade came off - not good. The tool oscillates at a high rate of speed which also means it vibrates. I must admit when I installed the blade I was skeptical that a simple hex nut and beveled washer would hold the blade in place. Obviously, it didn't (and yes, the beveled washer was installed correctly per Dremel's clear warning). I reinstalled the blade and re-tightened the hex-nut (forcefully to the point the amount of torque made me wonder how long the hub mount would last).
I contacted Dremel and they admitted the loosening blade was a known issue and a fix had been developed in the form of another washer (I presumed a lock washer, but the customer service rep was not sure). She offered to overnight express the washer to me and of course I declined the generous offer and suggested they simply drop it in the mailbox.
Aside from this mishap, I'm pleased and the prospects of the tool are very good. As the first reviewer points out, the blades that come with the kit are wood only blades. However, metal and grout blades are available. Here's my rating of the various aspects of the tool:
1. Ergonomics - 5-star. Ergonomically, this tool feels good in your hand. Not too big with enough heft to feel like a quality tool. I have used the Fein Multi-master which is bigger and heavier than the Dremel version. However, I like the feel of the Dremel.
2. Power - 5-star. Although I cut through relatively easy-to-cut pine, the tool never felt under-powered. For most projects where you'd use this tool, I don't think power will be an issue. The ability to cut through materials is likely to be dictated by the blade used (true of any saw).
3. Durability - ?-star. Time will tell. My guess is that the blade changing hub will be the first to go if you end up changing blades frequently.
4. Blade Change Feature - 2-star. In the era of quick blade change everything, Dremel missed the mark with a conventional hex screw setup. It is a slow process of switching from one blade to another. This is where the Fein tool has a distinct edge.
5. Carrying Case - 5-star. Surprisingly nice, well made, attractive, and can hold a few extra blades.
6. Cord Length - 3-star. It's 6' feet long and of avg quality. Would have been nice if longer and more rubbery than plastic (just doesn't uncoil like you'd expect from a good quality electric tool). However, tools with long cords can introduce some baggage.
7. Dremel Customer Service - 5-star. My experience exceeded my expectations. Other companies should take notice.
8. Value - 4-star. In case you're unaware, Fein had the patent on the oscillating saw until September 30, 2008. This is why it cost $400+ all these years. On October 1st, Dremel, Bosch, and Chicago all came out with competing versions. The Chicago version is on sale at Harbor Freight for $39 while the Bosch (which is battery operated) is just under $200. At just under $100, the Dremel is likely a little over-priced, but, still a decent value. I suspect once Hitachi, Makita, Milwaukee, Ridgid, and others get in on the act, the price will get closer to $50. Their money is made with the replacement blades.
Washer Update - I received the washer from Dremel. As I said above, their customer service was impressive; at least over the phone. The washer I receiver appears to be more of a passifier instead of a solution. It is a flat washer that is significantly over-sized; not fitting the hub's shaft. I finally bought a right-sized lock-washer and it appears to have done the trick. I retract my 5-star Dremel Customer Service rating above, however, I still recommend the product.

Dremel MM11 Multi-Max Hook and Loop Sand Pad Review

After several uses, I've found the sanding pad works fine. Not wanting to pay for Dremel's sandpaper sheets, I hunted for another option and found Home Depot carries "Gator Zip Sander XL" refill sheets. They're 3-7/8 x 9-7/8 and I can cut 4 triangles for the Dremel from each sheet. A pack of 6 is about 7 bucks. It's not hard to do the math on that!
I have since found the same thing here: Gator Finishing 7247 Step-2 Zip XL Refill Sandpaper

Dremel MM501 1/16-Inch Multi-Max Carbide Grout Blade Review

Dremel MM501 1/16-Inch Multi-Max Carbide Grout Blade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this blade to remove some damaged grout and to remove grout from around a broken floor tile in the kitchen. These are heavy tiles, so the grout is thick and about 3/8 inch wide.
My wife was really concerned that I would end up cutting into or otherwise damage good tile. Never a problem.
This was absolutely effortless, fast, and allowed surgical precision. No kidding. The control this offered was astounding. Since the tool doesn't rotate, it can't grab or run. It goes ONLY where you want it to go.
Also, since it doesn't rotate, it doesn't kick up a cloud of dust. This is not to say there is no dust - there is. But, it stays right in the area you are cutting. One tip here is to keep a small paint brush handy to gently brush back the little bit of dust from around your work area to keep your work clearly visible. From there, a quick vacuum hose will pick up the dust.
After a couple of minutes, the grout was completely cleared and my skeptical wife was amazed that this tool could go right to the edge of the tile and do it perfectly without touching the tile. It is THAT good.
I got the 1/16 inch blade in case I need to do narrow grout work in the bathrooms, but if you are working on broader grouting, you may want to opt for the 1/8 inch blade.

Dremel 6300-03 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit Review

Dremel 6300-03 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got the tool for Christmas. Needed it for undercutting baseboard as well as cut aluminum from my front door frame to fit in my new front-door threshold. As some of the other folks in these reviews, the tool wood-cutting bit kept on coming loose. I was afraid of tightening it too much, but after it came loose again-and-again after about 5 minutes of use I decided to tighten it until could feel the motor turning. This time it did not come loose as easily but I am not sure how long it will handle this - so far so good. It does however still come loose when I hit a hard spot, like when I encounter a nail or when it touched the cement floor when cutting the baseboard or if you force it - let the tool do the work.
If you want a tool that you can force and use for hours on end, you need to consider another, and needless to say a considerably more expensive tool. It is good value for money, and if you - like me - undercut lots of baseboard manually with a jam saw before you got this tool, you will find this tool a great time-saver and an absolute pleasure to use.
Just as side note I have only used the wood and wood-metal bits and have not used it to cut pipes, grout, etc, just used it to cut a small notch out of an aluminum door frame and the baseboards. I did use it to trim the edge of a custom-cut laminate flooring piece as I was too lazy to use the circular saw and it burns the wood but it did manage to trim 1mm off of it none the less.
Pros: Lightweight, relatively inexpensive, easy to use, great time-saver over manually cutting door-jams.
Cons: Thick (solid-wood) stair jams (not sure what this is called, the wood trim on either side of my stairs that run all the way down the stairs and meet the concrete floor where I installed the laminate flooring and had to undercut the wood trim to slide the laminate underneath, about 2in thick solid wood) took a while to cut and burns the wood with smoke pouring out of the wood (probably other oscillating tools will do the same), the heat that comes from the tool after about 5 minutes of continuous cutting is excessive, the bit that comes loose again-and-again is my biggest concern as now that I tighten it real good (until I can feel the motor turning) am not sure how long it will last before something strips or breaks but since it still holds have to give it the benefit of the doubt, the casing it comes in is very cheap, the custom bits are expensive (like the sander).

Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit Review

Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During my installation of a new screen door, I found that it wouldn't be able to close without cutting out some of the wood frame all around the door. After chiseling the jamb a little at at time, I found that I would have to cut about 1/2" off the jamb. I did one side in a couple hours and called it a night. That night I thought about the Fein MultiMaster 250 Start Power Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool info-mercial and how that tool could be a big help in cutting the jamb in-place since I didn't want to remove it and didn't have a table saw to cut it anyway. So, the next day I went to Home Depot and purchased the Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit for $109. I would have bought it from Amazon, but I wanted to finish installing the door right away.
USE: The Dremel is quite easy to use. The attachments are not quite "quick-change" since you have to use an (included) allen wrench to loosen a screw and place the "bit" under the washer and onto 12 pegs (which helps secure the "bit" into place) then tighten the screw to secure it. Cutting was fairly easy; I used the rectangular shaped wood and metal cutting tool, but it was a little difficult getting the "feel" of where it was cutting once it was into the wood a good amount. (Now that I think about it, perhaps I should have used the circular wood cutting tool or at least tried it, duh.) The tool is multi-speed (1-10) and cut through the wood pretty easily (on 8 speed). The sanding "bit" was a little more of a challenge to get on as it required the complete removal of the screw and washer assembly in order to get the sanding pad on. I don't know if my pad is a little defective, but it was a little difficult to get it on the pegs. Once on , however, the tool did an excellent job of sanding the frame down to a nice smooth finish. (Although one corner of the "hook & loop" pad got totally wrecked - its a good thing there's three corners to use.)
OVERVIEW: Overall, I was satisfied with the tool. It cut quite well and sanded great. Putting on the attachments was fairly easy, except for the sanding pad. The product description on this site says that it creates low dust, but it made a good amount of dust. Though that is expected when cutting wood with a high speed tool. And it also said that it was quiet, but the next time I use this tool, I am using earplugs because at that high rpm (close to 20,000) it pretty much screams when cutting and my ears felt like I was at a rock concert afterward. I would also recommend a dust mask and closed eye protection for the dust. For the price (cheaper than the competition), the Dremel did a good job and is, to me, a reputable, trusted brand.
