Variable Speed Oscillating Multifunction Power Tool Review

(More customer reviews)When I first bought a multifunction tool, the Rockwell was the only real alternative to the Fein. I had good experience with other Rockwell products, but there was damage to the accessory case, so I didn't get to try it before sending it back. I found the original Chicago Electric single speed tool (no longer made) for such a low price that I figured if it lasted through the job I bought it for, it would have been worth it. Plus it would give me a good idea whether to replace it with a "real" tool such as the Rockwell.
That summer, I redid my windows and door frames on a good sized two story house. I used it from morning until it got dark for about two months straight. I could not think of a power tool I had gotten in a long time that came close to the versatility and sheer usefulness of that tool.
The only problems with my first one were that it was a single speed (11,000 RPM; Chicago now makes a faster single speed one) and the part where the accessories attach did not have the raised parts that went into the small holes on the blades near the center. That meant that it occasionally slipped unless I tightened the bolt with an Allen wrench so tight it was scary, but it did not come close to stripping.
It may seem unusual that I am reviewing the wrong tool, but I was so impressed with it that I went out and bought this multi speed model. It does everything the first one does and more. It is larger and more powerful, but not unwieldy. Blade attachment is easier and they remain in place among a good choice of positions. It comes with a nice case, but it could have been designed better for storing the power chord.
Since I bought mine, I've tried a variety of attachments, and have a few that I'm sure I will need but have not used yet. Nevertheless, it's not a tool that just sits on a shelf. I probably use at as often as an electric drill, which is saying a lot in the power tool world.
The advantage of a multi speed model is that it works well for sanding at lower speeds when appropriate and at higher cutting speeds when needed. It has a similar speed range to the best on the market.
Usually when I see a tool that claims to do everything, it's a gimmick and either I would never come close to using all the attachments or the tool doesn't measure up to what I saw on TV. This one was different. It exceeded my expectations in every way.
One attachment worked well to dig out silicone caulking from around doors and windows so they could be redone properly. It also served to scrape off flaking paint easily and thoroughly. There is some risk of gouging, but I haven't found anything better for that application.
Where it really saved more than its price in a single use was for plunge cutting. If you need to cut off a section of wood that needs to be left in place, it can't be done with a circular saw or jigsaw and even hand tools can't help with what I needed. Being able to easily replace a section of rotting wood on something like a garage door or door frame can pay for the tool alone compared to replacing the entire section of wood.
I was even able to cut down the inside of a door frame from top to bottom along the edge of the molding that the door closes against. Any carpenter would have told me that I would have needed to redo the entire frame for my French doors, and replacing the doors themselves would have been more practical given the same labor. But I was able to fabricate a replacement section using this tool, a router and a table saw.
It really does allow you to cut straight lines in wood freehand. A rotary "zip" style tool is an example of something that looked great on TV but had limited real life use. If you want to cut out sections of drywall to put in switches, outlets or medicine cabinets, this is the tool to use instead. And you will have no problems doing it freehand. You also have the option of nailing a board in place temporarily and using it as a guide, since you can literally plunge cut along the edge of it. But you may find that drawing a pencil line works just as well.
I've had a finishing sander for years, and it's handy for tight corners and special needs where no other sander will work. I didn't use it much and didn't think I'd gain much by having yet another tool to do the same thing. But the multifunction tool worked better than the original, and I'd recommend the finger sander as an add on. Having the tool literally already in hand when I needed to sand made me realize how flexible a finishing sander can be and I now use it a lot for that. All it needed was a quick change of attachments.
The stock attachments really do work well for jobs such as stripping linoleum and removing glued down carpet. The only job I found where it did not fully meet expectations was slicing through copper tubing. If you get up above 3/4 inch it will be slow going, and there are better tools for the job unless you need a flush cut and can keep the pipe rigid enough that it won't vibrate independently.
I've even used it to cut slots in screw heads for screwdriver use. Although a Dremel works better for that if you have one already, it's still a good tool for use in a pinch.
The biggest difference between this and other power tools is that there are so many jobs that it not only does well, I can literally think of no alternative short of demolition and replacement. I thought it would be a specialty tool for those rare tasks when nothing else works. But it's so much more, and one of the few power tools I'd hate to be without.

However, what I received was different from the picture and the description. My kit has no stainless steel cutting blades, nor does it have the large "triangular" japanese cutting blade pictured in the middle of the kit. I received all black coated blades and a "coarse toothed" narrow blade in the center position. All seem to be robust, and the ones that I have used worked well. Just be warned that you may not receive the described product!

Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Review

Pros:
- cheaper than the others
- cordless and really easy to handle
- easy to learn and use
Cons:
- battery life is about 10 mins with good use
- it does get a bit hot after 5 mins of continual use - enough to warrant gloves
- not nearly as powerful as what I've seen Fein do.
Now, comparing to the reviews I've read or the commercials I've seen for the Fein MultiMaster, it doesn't even come close. If you're anything more than a weekend do-it-yourself-er, this may not be for you. But if you're like me, this tool is sufficient and for the price, not bad at all (I actually picked this up for around $60, refurbished, from a common store's liquidation site).
What I used it for that worked out really well:
- cutting out the square electrical outlet holes in our kitchen cabinets
- dry wall cut-outs
- precise cuts for molding, baseboards, special projects
- small cuts (< 6 inches) on plywood
- precise cuts on medium quality bamboo floors (like around door moldings, corners, etc.)
- sanding an old teak chair I was restoring, getting into those small crevices, in between the slats.
What I used it for that didn't work out:
- Cutting notches in 2x4's - not enough power
- Precise cuts on dense teak floors - not enough power
- medium or longer cuts (> 6 inches) on plywood - not enough power; takes too long
- metal gutters - it did the job eventually, but it took a while. Again, not enough power.
People also recommend another battery, which I kind of agree with - however I have not yet, as I've managed to charge in between uses to keep the battery charged all day. I've also placed the whole tool + battery in the refrig to cool it down while not used it (just for 15 mins or so). It does get hot and once it did not charge because the unit was too hot.
Overall, I really like the tool and it's one of my favorites - but you really do need to adjust your expectations. If you're a contractor or a person who will use this every day - this won't do.

All are good tools, the guy at Harbor Freight store told me that they had many returns. I really liked it for the price and the cheap accessories i.e. diamond blade for $5.99.
I finally selected the bosch and i believe it is the best choice. I like it cordless, during my use, power lasted 9min, but have 4 batteries and 2 chargers on hand as i also own the PS40.
Very powerful tool. Did sanding, grouting, cutting and scraping all with ease and no fatigue on my hand (love the ergo).
i am not a pro, just a diy guy.
I strongly recommend this tool.

Versa-Tool DB10C 1-3/8-Inch Precision Japan Universal Oscillating Saw Blade For Dremel Multi-Max, 10 Pack Review

(More customer reviews)These blades differ from other wood blades in their bigger and longer teeth. However, it does not mean that they cut faster or last longer. I bought a set off eBay to cut drywall and baseboard. Comparing these blades with Dremel wood blades, the advantage is that they have a wider cutting width. But the uneven teeth on the Japanese blades have several disadvantages. First they remove more materials and create more dusts. Second, the cut surface is less smooth. Third, it is more difficult to slice off a thin piece if your first cut is not straight enough. Fourth, it is more difficult to precisely insert the blade at cut line in a plunge cut. The Japanese blades like to "walk" a little. I don't see many applications where "Japanese blades" can do a better job or faster job in the context of multi-function tool.

(More customer reviews)I probably would have given this 4 starts -1 for the ridiculous price but the 2 stars given by the other opinion made me boost mine. This tool DOES include the quick change - there is a different lesser model that does not but this model does. This made quick work of cutting some drywall that would have been a royal PIA to cut with other means given that it was already hung and I needed to cut the drywall all the way into the back corner which would be impossible with almost any other tool - so I'd have had to get it out with a chisel - in my bizarre situation there was also metal corner bead in the inside corner again no problem for this tool and would have been nearly impossible any other way.
I also had a job where I needed to cut some base molding that was already up and installed - again piece of cake for this guy very difficult with other tools.
Cons - (other than price) it was a bit noisier than I thought it would be - but not bad.

Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PS50-2A-RT 12-Volt Max Multi-X Cutting Kit Review

(More customer reviews)This is the the first reconditioned tool I ever bought (along with a recon Bosch Bulldog at the same time - no issues with Bulldog). I felt like I was taking a risk, but I'm glad I did. My boss bought a brand new one and mine came looking and working just as good, for $80 some less. I wanted the Fein for years, but here's the deal. The Fein is a great tool, no doubt, I've used a couple of them. Its also expensive. $200+ for the most basic kit that has no case, and I like my tools in cases when I can. The blades are also very expensive. The Bosch blades aren't cheap either, but a lot easier on the wallet. More after market blades are coming available. I'm still waiting to recieve some, so I don't know if the quality will stack up.
The big knock on this tool is battery life. First, rest assured that this does not mean power, it has plenty. Run time is the issue, but I say that's no issue at all. Some say the battery only lasts less than 5 minutes in continuous use. What, are you ripping 2X4's with it? This tool does not take the place of a circular, reciprocating, jig-, or any other kind of saw that will get those jobs done. These blades are much more expensive than other saw blades so it makes no sense to do that. This tool (and the Fein and others) is sold as a sander, too. Maybe this is where the battery-life complaints arise. I haven't sanded with it and probably never will. I have probably a dozen sanders, and the little triangular sanding sheets for these tools are, you guessed it, expensive compared to other sand paper.
So why have this tool? The flush and plunge cutting wood blades are all I'm interested in. It can't be beat for, say, undercutting door jambs and casing for new hardwood or tile floors, or trimming back existing base for a new door or new wider casing. As a trim carpenter its great, faster and more precise than the old ways of doing things with hand saws and chisels. With two batteries, run time is no issue as its only used in short bursts. I'm very happy to have saved $80-90 with the reconditioned tool.

(More customer reviews)Blade is much cheaper than the official Dremel grout removal blade. I've never used the Dremel blade but this one worked great for cutting grout. However, ceramic tile should not even be listed in the description. If you are looking to make a line in your tile, it is fine for that. It will not cut the tile though. You get get a pretty good groove with a lot of patience and breaks to let the blade and tool cool off. After trying for awhile I dulled a good part of the blade and gave up. I cut the grout instead and remove the tiles I was looking to put a hole in. I'll cut the hole and lay new tile instead. It does work for grinding thinset as well. Do not get it for tile! I am still giving it a 3 as it does say limited cutting and I didn't really think it would do it.

I install interior carpentry for a living and really sat up on the couch when I saw how easily it cuts existing baseboard and door casing without tearing up the wall or beating it up with a chisel. However, I couldn't justify the obscenely high price of the Fein for a tool I thought I would rarely use, so I bought a cheap knock off version just to test it's versatility. In the one week that I had the El Cheapo before it quit, I used it to cleanly cut fascia board, T&G flooring, T-111 siding, and casing. It seemed like every time I turned around I found a new use for it. OK, now I was convinced I couldn't live without one, time to upgrade. After checking the reviews and actually handling the competitions versions at HD and Lowes, I decided to go for it get the Fein. Hands down this tool looks and feels way better than anything else I checked out. The quick blade change feature on the Fein helps justify the price, as my other tool required frequent stopping and tightening with an allen wrench. So far it has performed smoothly and competently. On the other hand I was really shocked at how cheap and flimsy the case is. What where they thinking when they designed that thing? For a couple bucks they could have designed a case more worthy of the tool. I'm used to the rugged Dewalt cases you get everytime you buy one of their tools. The price of the Fein replacement blades is also off the scale. I suggest you try Versa-Tool brand which are a good quality blade at 1/3 the price. Overall, I am pleased with the tool itself, and know from past expierence that the sting of the high price will fade over time if the tool holds up as expected.

Bosch PS50-2B 12-Volt Max Multi-X Carpenter Kit Review

(More customer reviews)This bosch multi-x use tool is exactly that. I do remodeling/ finishing/framing and light cabinet building on site and install. This tool has been used much more than I had originally thought. I've used it for drywall cutting(it makes very nice straight cuts with relatively little dust flying everywhere). I've used it for flush cutting, it will cut through a 2x4 if needed. It works great where it's to hard or awkward to use a sawzall. The detail sanding pad works great and is very nice for tight spaces or small areas. I wish there was a vaccum attachment for this though...?

Also the blades are very nice and are quite durable. I'm anxious to see bosch release their own blades/attachments soon. (A rep just said that they should be released next week. Dec 8th? ) Also he said they would be priced from 10-40% LESS then the compareable Fein attachments!! Thats about time.

Another thing. I tried to use the new Dremel's sandpaper on the bosch, but the Dremel's sandpaper are too small. They don't work well at all. I think the Dremel's other attachments will work fine though.
I think i would actually give this a 4.5 star if i could because there are a few shortcomings.
1. The battery life is short. maybe 5-10 minutes depending on how hard you're pushing this tool and how high the variable speed is. Also when maxed out, this tool does make a good amount of noise and has some vibration. I've used it often dialed about halfway up. Its quieter and less agressive but usually plenty of power. Also, a bosch Rep told me that the 12 volt max batteries are exactly the same as their 10.8 volt. I just picked up the 10.8 volt impact driver because i needed more batteries to keep this tool running. They are interchangeable and seem to work perfectly the same. I think that the battery option and freedom of cords far outweigh the downside of short battery life. (As long as you have more than 2 batteries!!!)
2. My multi-x has a hard to turn off switch. It may just be mine, because in the store the floor model was just fine.. But its bothersome.

To summerize this, I am very happy with my purchase and can't believe how i did certain things before having this handy tool. If you're serious about being efficient on the job, and are looking for a new favorite tool, you can't go wrong here.
***EDIT*** I would definately not go more than 4 Stars due to the battery life issues and no charge in cold weather. I may be looking to the Fein Multi master Top kit down the road....

(More customer reviews)I have been surprised by how useful my Dremel Multimax tool is and have been going through bits/blades/sand paper like crazy--it is logical when you realize that the surface is just not very big whether it is a saw blade or a little triangle of sand paper.
I ordered a little pack of an assortment of accessories that came in a neat little aluminum suitcase. I ordered directly from Amazon and it arrived real fast--earlier than the first estimated date.
When you order from Specialty Diamond (through Amazon) they parcel post it to you (not Priority Mail) and have no choice--no rush choices are offered.
These things are expensive at even Home Pot and not available at the supply companies that cater to the Fein MultiTool pros so these Versa tools are really attractive and they offer for most of these tools.
Just plan ahead and buy a few extra.
